How your
connection works.

Your laptop connects through a VPN app or a travel router. The VPN sends its internet traffic through an encrypted connection to your chosen US server or home internet.

Websites usually see the public IP address at the US end. Your laptop stays physically with you.

Your usual laptop

With the app option, you install a VPN app and switch it on from your laptop. With either router option, you connect the laptop to your travel router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. We check any company VPN or restrictions before setup.

A small router that travels with you

The travel router uses the internet where you are staying. It creates the encrypted connection to your US server or home internet. Both ends need power and a working internet connection.

A US connection you control

You can use a private cloud server in your own account, or compatible equipment at a US home where you have permission to install it. A cloud server gives you a data-centre address; a home setup uses that home’s address.

Three ways to connect.

We help you choose what fits.

1. An app on your laptop

Download a compatible VPN app, such as WireGuard, and import the connection we prepare for you. Turn it on to connect your laptop directly to your private US VPN server.

  • No travel router needed
  • You must be able to install the app on the laptop
  • Each device needs its own connection setup

A private US cloud server is still needed unless you already have a suitable VPN server at a US home. Cloud hosting is a separate ongoing cost.

2. Two routers

One compatible router stays at a US home or another authorised US residential location. The second router travels with you to the country you are moving to.

  • Uses the US home’s internet IP address
  • The US router and home internet must stay on
  • Connect your laptop to the travel router abroad

Needs suitable equipment at both ends. Home power, internet-provider compatibility and upload speed matter. A cloud server is not needed for this option.

3. One travel router

Take one compatible GL.iNet router abroad and connect it to a private US cloud server. Your laptop connects to the travel router, which handles the VPN.

  • No router or home connection needed in the US
  • Usually no separate VPN app on the laptop
  • Your US cloud server stays running in your account

Uses a data-centre IP address, rather than a residential home IP. Cloud hosting is a separate ongoing cost. The router abroad still needs local internet.

All three options need working local internet. Company-managed devices and company VPNs may limit which options are compatible; we check your setup before recommending one.

We set it up.
You see it working.

We explain each step and test the connection with you before handover. You keep ownership of your router, accounts and server.

Assess your setup

Your 30-minute consultation reviews your laptop, phone, any company VPN and the connections available at home and abroad. You get equipment recommendations and a setup plan.

Configure your connection

Basic includes guided configuration of one agreed connection option: the laptop app, two compatible routers, or one travel router with a US cloud server. We configure WireGuard and help connect one laptop.

Test it together

We connect your laptop, check that websites see the intended public IP address, and check that website names resolve correctly. We also test the router’s VPN disconnect protection where supported. You see the results on your own equipment.

Learn to use it

We walk you through connecting and recovering after a restart. You receive written instructions so you can repeat the steps yourself. Plus and Max also include backup-connection training and 90 days of email support for the installed setup.

Start with
a consultation.

For $50 USD, we assess your setup and talk through your options on a 30-minute call. Tell us which laptop you use, whether it runs a company VPN, and what router or US home connection you have.

A few questions.

Can I use this with a work laptop?

A compatible GL.iNet travel router can handle the VPN connection so you do not need to install our VPN app on the laptop. You connect the laptop to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Company VPNs and security settings can affect compatibility, so we review your setup first. A router does not override workplace travel rules or guarantee that your location stays hidden.

Do I need to buy equipment?

If you already own a compatible GL.iNet router, we check whether it can be reused. Otherwise, we recommend equipment before you buy. The two-router option needs one compatible router at the US home and another with you abroad. The one-travel-router option uses a US cloud server instead of a US router. The laptop-app option needs no travel router. Hardware and shipping are separate from our setup fee.

Can I connect without a router?

Yes. Download a compatible VPN app on a laptop where you are allowed to install it, and use the connection we configure. You still need a US VPN server. This can be a private cloud server or a suitable server at a US home. The app option protects the configured laptop; it does not automatically connect your other devices.

Will this guarantee that my location stays hidden?

No. A VPN changes the public IP address seen by websites, but devices and services may use other location signals. A cloud IP can also be identified as a data centre address. This service does not guarantee location concealment or approval from an employer or other service.

Can you help with a setup I already own?

Yes. Bring the model of your GL.iNet router or details of your existing cloud server. The $50 assessment and consultation checks what can be reused and what setup work is needed. Keep passwords and VPN keys out of booking notes.

What do I need before we begin?

Start with your laptop and the model of any router you already own. We assess compatibility before recommending purchases. For setup, you need the agreed equipment, a working internet connection and access to the accounts you own or are authorised to manage. Keep passwords and VPN keys out of the enquiry form.

Does the VPN stay on when my laptop is off?

The server or home VPN device can stay available independently of your laptop. Your travel router can reconnect when it has power and internet. A home setup needs its US equipment and internet to stay on; a cloud server needs to keep running in your provider account. The VPN connects only while the necessary equipment and internet are available.

What happens if the connection drops?

On supported routers, we configure and test a setting that blocks internet traffic while the VPN is disconnected. This can mean your internet pauses until the VPN reconnects. We show you how to check the connection and recover it. Plus and Max include a backup VPN, which may help with a protocol or connection problem; it still needs working internet at both ends.

Will calls and video meetings work?

We can test them with you using your actual setup. Speed and delay depend on the connections at both ends and the distance between them. A VPN does not improve a weak internet connection, so we check performance rather than promise a fixed speed.

Who controls my equipment and accounts?

You do. Your router and cloud-provider accounts stay in your name. We explain any access needed for setup, and you can review or remove that access afterwards. We do not need your passwords or private VPN keys in the booking form.

What happens after I send a request?

We email you to arrange your 30-minute assessment and consultation and explain how to pay its $50 USD fee. After the assessment, we confirm the setup scope and any equipment or provider costs. If you choose to proceed, the consultation payment counts toward your selected package and you pay the remaining setup balance before configuration begins.

How much does it cost?

The assessment and consultation costs $50 USD and is credited toward your chosen package. Basic costs $150 USD in total, leaving $100 USD before setup if you proceed. Plus costs $300 USD in total, leaving $250 USD after the consultation. Max costs $600 USD in total, leaving $550 USD after the consultation. Hardware, shipping, hosting and home internet are separate where needed.

How does the money-back guarantee work?

If we cannot deliver the setup agreed in writing, we refund your setup payment. For a fully paid package, this is $100 USD for Basic, $250 USD for Plus or $550 USD for Max. The $50 USD assessment and consultation fee is excluded. Hardware, shipping, hosting, home internet and other provider bills are excluded too. Reply to your booking email to request a refund.

What is the Max package for?

Some hotel, office, campus and national networks slow down or block common VPN traffic. Max adds a second, disguised connection that we test on your own networks, plus a written plan for which connection to try first. It helps where a network blocks standard VPN traffic, but we cannot promise that any network will never block or detect your connection.

What happens after setup?

Basic includes training and written handover instructions. Plus and Max add 90 days of email support for the configuration we installed, starting at handover. Ongoing maintenance, extra devices and changes to the agreed setup are quoted separately.

Can I set it up myself?

Yes. For a connection through your own home, GL.iNet publishes a guide using two compatible routers. A cloud-server setup uses a different process.
